Begin with the problem behind the comparison
Choosing a centrifuge vs bag filter for coolant starts with the reason the existing arrangement needs to change. Frequent bag replacement, unstable supply flow and persistent fine contamination are different problems. Establish which one is costing time or affecting production before requesting an alternative.
A bag filter traps particles in a replaceable medium supported inside a housing. A solids-removal centrifuge collects separable particles through centrifugal action and requires planned cleaning or discharge. The first is described by the medium and its retention performance; the second by the separation achieved under stated operating conditions.
Neither description supplies a complete equipment specification. A useful comparison includes the contaminant, fluid properties, intended flow, duty cycle and acceptable downstream condition. For grinding applications in particular, identify the fine fraction associated with the problem instead of judging the installation only by the amount of visible sludge collected.

Bag filter → Centrifuge → Combined circuit → Acceptance test
Different mechanisms create different service work
| Decision factor | Bag filter | Rotating-bowl centrifuge |
|---|---|---|
| Separation basis | Retention through a selected barrier medium | Particle migration in a centrifugal field |
| Main consumable or service task | Replace or service the specified element; inspect seals and support | Remove collected solids; perform scheduled mechanical maintenance |
| Key operating observation | Flow and differential pressure across the housing | Treatment flow, separation result and solids accumulation |
| Evidence to request | Efficiency, rating basis, compatibility and loading behaviour | Representative fluid test at the proposed operating condition |
| Residual stream | Used medium and retained liquid/solids | Collected sludge with retained liquid |
| Possible combined role | Final protection or polishing after bulk removal | Reduce a separable solids load before a barrier stage |
Eaton's bag-filtration technical article describes products spanning nominal to absolute filtration levels. Consequently, it would be inaccurate to claim that all bag filters are crude screens or that every bag with the same micron label performs identically. Compare a specified element, not an undefined technology category.

Read the micron claim carefully
Ask for the retention efficiency at the stated particle size and the method used to establish it. Clarify whether the figure describes a nominal rating, an absolute rating or another manufacturer-specific convention. A rating without its efficiency and test conditions is an incomplete basis for replacing a filter.
For a centrifuge, request incoming and treated sample results at the proposed flow, temperature and loading. There is no pore opening that makes a blanket cutoff claim equivalent to a barrier rating. The material density and liquid viscosity affect how particles respond, so a result on one fluid cannot simply be copied to another.
Also establish how performance will be measured in a working emulsion. Droplets, air and particles may complicate some measurement techniques. Agree on sample preparation and analysis with the laboratory or fluid supplier, and preserve the distinction between a diagnostic sample and an acceptance test.
Check flow throughout the service cycle
A bag housing should be assessed with the specified medium, fluid and allowable pressure conditions. Evaluate both the clean-element condition and the loaded condition. A pump that supplies the required flow through a clean bag may not maintain the same delivery as resistance increases.
Ask how operators know when replacement is required and what happens during the change. A duplex arrangement may permit switching between housings, but it adds valves and an operating procedure. Never assume that bypassing the filter during maintenance is acceptable for a component that depends on the filtered supply.
A centrifuge also needs a controlled feed and an agreed response to discharge, cleaning or a fault. In a side-stream installation, treatment flow is distinct from machine supply flow. The sump can continue collecting new contamination while treatment proceeds, so assess the circulating concentration over time rather than multiplying nominal flow by operating hours and assuming complete cleaning.
Compare the actual labour and waste streams
Record current bag changes over a representative production period. Include preparation, isolation, draining, element handling, seal checks, restart and waste transfer. Buying the replacement bag is only one part of that job. Note whether the work happens during normal attendance or requires an interruption to production.
For the centrifuge proposal, request the expected cleaning procedure, access clearances, routine inspection tasks and service parts. A manually cleaned configuration needs a workable cleanout window. Automatic discharge may change operator involvement but still needs collection capacity and supervision appropriate to the application.
Weigh or otherwise quantify the outgoing waste using a consistent method. Used bags can hold liquid, and centrifuge sludge can also retain liquid. Neither stream should be priced as dry metal unless that condition is established. Confirm the actual recipient's acceptance criteria and charges before assigning savings.
When each option makes sense
Compare other options in the coolant filtration methods guide. When waste handling drives bag-change costs, use the coolant disposal-cost worksheet to keep liquid, sludge and used media separate.
A bag filter may remain the practical choice when loading is modest, element life is predictable, compatibility is established and the documented retention meets the process requirement. It can also provide a defined downstream protection stage where a separate unit removes the bulk of the solids.
A centrifuge deserves a trial where separable fines continuously burden disposable media or where frequent media handling has become a significant maintenance task. Its case depends on the test result, operating hours and service requirements. A larger initial investment is not justified merely because the replacement bags have a visible purchase cost.
A combined installation may reduce loading on the final bag while preserving its protective role. Measure whether the improvement in replacement interval is meaningful under comparable production. Retain the final stage if the centrifuge alone does not meet the required supply condition; do not remove it simply to make the proposal look consumable-free.
Build the comparison from your own records
Use the same evaluation period for both options. Add installed equipment cost separately from recurring costs. Recurring entries should include media, electricity, labour, service, collected-material handling and any fluid actually lost from the system. Keep avoided replacement fluid separate from recovered solids revenue.
Run a low, expected and high loading case. A plant with occasional campaigns may reach a different decision from a line operating continuously, even when their instantaneous flow is similar. Include planned shutdowns and the actual staffing arrangement. Compare costs only after both candidates have demonstrated acceptable treatment.
The filtration payback guide provides the broader calculation structure. The filterless filtration guide explains why absence of disposable media does not mean absence of maintenance or waste.
Specify the trial before ordering
Collect representative feed, treated fluid and captured material. Record production material, fluid condition, flow and elapsed run time. For the bag, identify the exact element and replacement criterion. For the centrifuge, identify the discharge or cleanout arrangement and the condition under which the samples were taken.
Agree on what would make the trial unsuccessful: inadequate particle control, unacceptable fluid change, impractical cleanout or inability to sustain the required duty. A test is useful when it can reject an unsuitable configuration as well as support a purchase.
Review the grinding coolant application and centrifuge selection guide before submitting the fluid and operating information. Vimfun can assess a solids-separation trial against that defined duty without assuming the bag filter must be removed.
