Thread Rolling Oil Filtration for Fines and Sludge

Thread rolling oil filtration removes suspended metal fines and sludge-forming solids before they continue circulating through the dies, pumps and lubricant sump.

The Process Problem

Thread Rolling Continuously Adds Solids to the Oil

Thread rolling forms the thread profile by pressing the workpiece between hardened dies. The process does not cut a thread in the same way as a turning tool, but it still introduces contamination into the lubricant circuit. Fine metallic wear particles can come from the workpiece, dies and handling system. Scale, phosphate coating residue or other surface material may also enter when the incoming blank carries a pretreatment layer.

These contaminants do not all settle immediately. Fine particles can remain suspended, circulate through the pump and return to the contact zone. Other material collects in low-flow areas and gradually forms sludge in the sump. Oil colour alone is not a reliable measure: dark oil may reflect chemistry or temperature, while damaging solids can be present before the change is obvious.

The practical filtration question is how much separable solid enters the system per shift, how quickly it accumulates and whether it is contributing to unstable lubrication, housekeeping work or premature oil replacement.

Operational Consequences

What Happens When Fines Remain in the Lubricant?

The effect depends on the oil, die design, material and operating load. The goal is not to promise a fixed increase in die life, but to remove one controllable source of abrasive and sludge-forming contamination.

01

Recirculating Abrasive Solids

Hard fines can repeatedly pass through the contact zone. Removing them reduces the circulating solid load, although die life still depends on material, alignment, load and lubrication.

02

Sump Sludge

Settled contamination increases cleaning work and occupies useful sump volume. Continuous or scheduled separation can reduce what remains available to settle.

03

Unplanned Oil Handling

Plants may replace oil because it is heavily contaminated even when the oil chemistry is not the only problem. Separating solids can support longer use, subject to oil analysis and process control.

Separación centrífuga

Clean the Oil Without Paper or Filter Bags

A centrifuge accelerates the oil in a rotating bowl. Denser suspended particles move outward and collect in the solids zone while clarified oil leaves the separator and returns to the rolling-oil circuit.

01 · FEED

Take a Controlled Side Stream

Oil is drawn from a representative area of the sump. Flow is selected around oil viscosity, tank volume, solids load and the required treatment rate.

02 · SEPARATE

Concentrate Dense Particles

Separation depends on particle size, density difference, oil viscosity and residence time. A centrifuge should not be described by a universal micron rating.

03 · RETURN

Return Clarified Oil

The clarified stream returns to the sump while collected solids remain in the bowl or are discharged according to the selected configuration.

Important limit: centrifugal separation controls separable solids. It does not restore oxidised oil, replenish additives, remove every type of tramp oil or correct an unstable lubricant concentration.

Use a Representative Oil and Solids Sample

Thread rolling contaminants vary with the workpiece material, pretreatment, die condition and production rate. A representative sample is more useful than a general statement about “dirty oil.” The sample should include suspended material from the operating sump, not only clear oil taken from the surface.

A useful trial records fluid type, temperature, viscosity if available, feed condition, test flow and collected solids. The result should show whether the troublesome particles have enough density difference to separate and whether the clarified stream is suitable for the process goal.

Testing is especially important when the oil is viscous, the fines are very light or the contamination contains a mixture of metal, coating residue and soft organic sludge. The system can then be sized from observed behaviour instead of an unsupported removal claim.

Model Direction

Choose the Centrifuge by Flow and Solids Load

VC-600 suits a dedicated machine or smaller sump where higher centrifugal force is useful. VC-1500 provides higher rated flow and larger solids capacity for several machines or a central lubricant tank. Final selection still requires the actual oil and contamination conditions.

Rated flow is equipment data, not a guarantee for every oil. Higher viscosity or difficult solids may require a lower operating flow or a different treatment arrangement.

Plan a Central Sump System
Installation and Boundaries

Integrate Filtration with the Existing Rolling Line

The separator is normally installed in a controlled bypass loop rather than replacing the machine’s main lubrication pump. The feed point should capture representative dirty oil, and the return point should encourage mixing without sending clarified oil directly back to the suction line.

Coarse chips, long swarf or foreign objects should be screened before the centrifuge feed pump. The plant must also provide safe access for inspection and solids handling. Automatic discharge reduces manual bowl cleaning, but it does not remove the need for checks, scheduled maintenance or suitable sludge collection.

If the main problem is free tramp oil, dissolved contamination, additive depletion or biological instability, another treatment step may be required. A combined system is often more accurate than expecting one separator to solve unrelated fluid problems.

  • Oil type, temperature and viscosity confirmed
  • Sump volume and operating level recorded
  • Metal, coating residue and sludge identified
  • Coarse chips screened where required
  • Feed and return positions mapped
  • Solids collection and maintenance access planned
